DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z April 14, 2016

SMOKE:
Central and Northern Plains:
An area of light density remnant smoke created from agricultural fires
yesterday was seen spanning from eastern Nebraska, through northwest
Missouri, Iowa into Minnesota and Wisconsin. There is a possibility
that this remnant smoke may have extended farther towards the northeast
although the upper peninsula of Michigan and eastern Wisconsin were
obscured by cloud cover. Multiple agricultural/prescribed burns occurred
over eastern Kansas which contributed to a myriad of light to medium
density smoke plumes which amalgamated into an area of medium density
smoke in eastern Kansas. This area of smoke was traveling towards the
northeast behind the remnant smoke. Several light density smoke plumes
were observed in the Northern Plains and were primarily being advected
to the northwest.

Bay of Campeche/Western Gulf of Mexico:
An area of light density smoke from ongoing seasonal burning
occurring over portions of Mexico and Central America was seen this
afternoon/evening moving to the north over the Bay of Campeche and
western/central Gulf of Mexico. Cloudiness over the northern Gulf of
Mexico interfered with smoke detection in that region.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
