DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1745Z April 26, 2016

SMOKE:
Southern Plains:
Several patches of thin smoke could be seen between cloud cover over
portions of central/northern Texas and southwest/central Oklahoma. This
smoke is likely remnant and has moved north from Mexico over the past
few days.

Bay of Campeche/Gulf of Mexico:
A large area of thin to moderately dense smoke can be seen in GOES
imagery spreading northward from the Bay of Campeche and the Yucatan
Peninsula region across the western and central Gulf of Mexico. Fires in
Mexico/Central America over the past few days are responsible for this
smoke. In addition, several small patches of thin remnant smoke can be
seen moving west-northwest from western Cuba and is likely from fires
there yesterday.

Mid-Atlantic Coast/Southern New England Coast:
An area of remnant smoke was moving eastward to the south of a frontal
boundary along the coast of southern New England. The smoke extended from
off the coast of Maryland/Delaware northeast along the New Jersey/New
York/Southern New England coastline. The smoke may be from fires yesterday
in the Southeast US.

DUST:
Western Texas to Central Kansas:
Elevated dust could be seen this morning in GOES-W imagery from west
Texas and the Texas Panhandle northeastward across western Oklahoma to
western/central Kansas. This dust was lifted from the deserts of the
southwestern US/northern Mexico yesterday and is was mixing with remnant
smoke over central Texas.

Missouri/Illinois:
An aerosol that is believed to be dust could be seen over
Missouri/Illinois. This dust is also likely from the southwest US.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
