DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1800Z April 28, 2016
SMOKE: Southeast US Coast: Remnant smoke from fires over the last few days in the Southeast US and in Mexico, Central America, and Cuba could be seen this morning along and off the coast of the Carolinas and just east of southeastern Virginia. The smoke is being drawn northeastward by a surface low off the Mid-Atlantic Coast. Bay of Campeche/Gulf of Mexico/Texas Coast/Louisiana/Mississippi: An expansive area of thin to moderately dense residual smoke from continued seasonal burning in portions of Mexico and Central America is visible from the Bay of Campeche northward across the western and central Gulf of Mexico into the Lower Mississippi River Valley and along the Texas coastline. This area of remnant smoke can be seen as far north as southern Mississippi and as extends east off the coast of the Florida Panhandle. Some cloud cover obscures the full extent of this smoke across the Gulf Coast. Southeastern Gulf of Mexico: A patch of thin remnant smoke could be seen moving northwest from western Cuba, likely from agricultural burning there over the past day or two. DUST: Mississippi River Valley/Central and Southern Plains: Areas of remnant elevated dust could be seen this morning over parts of Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and northern Texas. Much of this dust seems to have come from northern Mexico, southern New Mexico, and western Texas one to two days ago.
