DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z May 10, 2016
SMOKE: Manitoba and Ontario/Northeast US: A large area of moderate to heavy density smoke mostly from a massive wildfire in northeast Alberta near Ft.McMurray and another wildfire along the Ontario/Manitoba border was observed in Manitoba and Ontario moving north and eventually northeast into northeastern Manitoba. From there it becomes more diffuse but continues to rotate clockwise around a ridge of high pressure in Ontario over Hudson bay then south as a thin stream of remnant light density smoke and eventually eastward across the US Northeast. Clouds obscure the western extent of this large area of smoke as well as the wildfire in northeast Alberta. Although heavy density smoke plumes could still be seen emitting to the north-northwest then north from a wildfire near Whiteshell Manitoba and another wild fire to the north along the Manitoba/Ontario border. Gulf of Mexico: An area of light to moderate density smoke was seen moving northwest from the Yucatan Peninsula into the Bay of Campeche, the western half of the Gulf of Mexico and southeast Texas. The full extent of this smoke can not be determined due to cloud cover over the northern half of the Gulf of Mexico although this smoke likely reaches into southern Louisiana as well. This smoke originated from extensive seasonal burning in southern Mexico and Central America. DUST: Texas: An area of light density blowing dust was seen over west central Texas moving towards the east-northeast into southwest Oklahoma. -Cronin THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/Products/land/hms.html GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
