DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z May 11, 2016

SMOKE:
Northeastern North America:
A large area of remnant light smoke from wildfires in Canada persists
over the Canadian Provinces of Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec as well
as the northeastern US states of New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island,
Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

Alberta/Saskatchewan:
The wildfire near Ft.McMurray continues to emit heavy density smoke
which is emanating to the south through Alberta into Montana.

Gulf of Mexico/Texas/Oklahoma:
A large area of light smoke can be seen over northeastern Mexico,
most of Texas and central Oklahoma.  This is likely remnant smoke from
agricultural burns in Mexico and Central America.
A large fire in the western panhandle of TX continues to emit light
smoke which is moving to the east.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
