DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z May 27, 2016

SMOKE
Central and Eastern Canada:
Thin to moderate to dense smoke was seen this evening, likely associated
with the Fort McMurray fires in central Canada. The smoke from these fires
extended from northeast Alberta eastward across northern Saskatchewan and
across central Manitoba to the western shore of Hudson Bay. The smoke
continues from the eastern shore of Hudson Bay, then continues across
northern Quebec and southwest Labrador.

Gulf of Mexico:
Thin smoke was analyzed throughout the entire western Gulf of Mexico,
including the Bay of Campeche; it appears the smoke originated from
agricultural burns in Mexico.

Western Atlantic Ocean to southern New England:
An area of thin remnant smoke from the wildfire in northeast Alberta
earlier today has moved offshore of New England and Nova Scotia.

DUST
Northern Mexico/Panhandle of Texas/New Mexico to western Kansas:
Dust appears to be emanating from multiple sources in the regions of
northern Mexico and New Mexico stretching northeastward across west Texas,
Oklahoma, and Kansas.

West Coast:
Across California there appears to be a dust plume traveling through
northern California, Washington State, and Oregon that may even reach
into northern Alberta.

UNKNOWN AEROSOL
Mid Atlantic southward to the Gulf of Mexico:
An unknown aerosol was observed from the mid Atlantic region southward
to the eastern Gulf of Mexico to Cuba.
This may be a mix of smoke from agricultural burning in the southeastern
U.S., dust, and general haze.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
