DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z June 01, 2016

SMOKE:
Alaska:
A band of light to moderately dense smoke was visible this evening
extending to the west coast of Alaska. The smoke was emanating from the
Medfra Fire in south central Alaska located about 70km east of McGrath.

Arizona:
Several active fires in central Arizona were emitting thin to locally
moderately dense smoke which covered portions of central Arizona and
extended to the southwest into southwestern Arizona with the leading
edge of the smoke reaching as far as northern Baja.

Gulf:
There is an area of smoke present in the southern Gulf of Mexico
confined to the Bay of Campeche; it appeared to originate from the
Yucatan Peninsula from agricultural burning.

DUST:
Based upon analysis using aerosol modeling, an area of possible dust or
sulfates appears to be moving through the Northern Plains states.

UNKNOWN AEROSOLS:
There are two areas of unknown aerosols traveling off the Eastern
Seaboard. Off the Southeastern Atlantic coast aerosols perhaps resulting
from biomass burning either in Central America or Asia are traveling off
the Florida and Georgia coast. The other area of unknown aerosols was
observed moving off of the coast of New England; although, the type of
aerosol was indeterminate.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
