DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0245Z June 2, 2016

SMOKE:
California:
A patch of dense smoke developed rapidly this evening fanning out
in multiple directions from a fire in southeastern Tulare County in
south central California. Some of the smoke exhibited pyro-cumulus
characteristics as it shot well up into the atmosphere and spread quickly
to the east away from the fire.

Arizona:
Several fires in central Arizona were emitting moderately dense to thick
smoke which moved mainly to the south and southeast during the day. The
larger surrounding area of thin density smoke covered a good portion of
central and southeastern Arizona.

Alaska:
An area of mainly thin density smoke was briefly visible over western
Alaska to the west of the Medfra Fire (located in south central Alaska
bout 70km east of McGrath) before cloudiness overspread the region
limiting additional information concerning the smoke. Patches of aerosol
which may be leftover thin density smoke from this fire could be seen
off the west coast of Alaska.

Bay of Campeche:
A patch of thin density smoke attributed to lingering seasonal burning
over portions of southeastern Mexico and Central America was generally
confined to the Bay of Campeche and inland in that region closer to the
fire activity.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
