DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z June 11 2016

SMOKE:
Middle Mississippi Valley:
An area of light density smoke that amalgamated from multiple small
plumes of smoke is present in the Mid Mississippi valley and is traveling
north. The smoke is the result of agricultural burning in the southern
Mississippi valley spanning from Louisiana northeast into Illinois.

Southern Plains/Mid-West:
Light density remnant smoke is present in the Southern Plains states
rotating around a high pressure system northeast toward the Mid-West.

Northwest Territories/Alberta/Saskatchewan:
An area of light density remnant smoke was observed in the central
portions of the Northwest Territories, northern Alberta and northern
Saskatchewan. This area of smoke likely originated from wildfires
in Alaska.

South-central Canada:
An area of light density remnant smoke likely from fires in northeast
Alberta and Saskatchewan was seen traveling east into southern Manitoba
and western Ontario.

DUST:
Gulf of Mexico:
A widespread unknown aerosol likely composed primarily of Saharan dust
was seen throughout the Gulf of Mexico. The optical thickness of this
aerosol increases in the southwestern portion of the Gulf of Mexico and
is likely the result of mixing between Saharan dust and emissions from
oil rigs in the Bay of Campeche.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
