DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1000Z June 13 2016

SMOKE:
Mid Atlantic to the Northern Plains:
A large area of remnant smoke extended from offshore New England southeast
to the Mid Atlantic coast and then extended northwest to portions of the
Northern Plains. The source region for this smoke is fire activity over
the Central Plains States and over Arizona.

Gulf of Mexico to Texas:
An area of remnant thin smoke was over the Gulf of Mexico and extending
west into portions of central Texas. The source region for this smoke
is fire activity over Mexico.

Montana to Nevada:
A thin axis of remnant smoke from fire activity over Alberta and the
Pacific Northwest extended from portions of Montana southwest to Nevada.

Central Saskatchewan to Central Alberta:
An area of thin remnant smoke from fire activity over northern Alberta
extended from portions of central Saskatchewan west to Central Alberta.

Central Plains and Southern Plains:
A large area of aerosol covered much of the Central and Southern Plains
with some remnant smoke from fire activity over Arizona and also from
Mexico.

Alaska:
Areas of smoke were seen off southwest Alaska and across the Aleutians
which is believed to have originated mostly from Asian wildfires. Thin
smoke stretching northeast over northern Alaska is thought to be from
the Warren Creek Fire in northwest Alaska.

Dust:
An area of blowing dust was seen from portions of southwest Utah south
through western Arizona.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
