DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1815Z June 17 2016

SMOKE:

Arizona/New Mexico/Plains/Central and Northern Mississippi Valley/Ontario:
Several wildfires burning from eastern Arizona into central New Mexico
over the past few days have produced a broad area of residual smoke that
has drifted into the Plains and farther east/north. An area of moderately
dense smoke stretches from Central Oklahoma (narrow band) north into
central and northwest Kansas, northeast Colorado, western/central Nebraska
and southern South Dakota. Very light remnant smoke is seen from eastern
New Mexico/ most of Texas and as far north as southern North Dakota and as
far east as western Wisconsin, across most of Illinois/Missouri. Smoke is
also seen wrapping around Low pressure in central Ontario in Canada.
Currently, light to moderately dense smoke is seen coming from the
wildfires in Arizona and New Mexico.

Southern California:
The wildfire west of Santa Barbara continues to produce a plume of light
to moderate smoke that extends west across southern California and just
across the border into southwest Nevada. Smoke is also southeast of the
fire over the Pacific and along coastal southern California to offshore
along northern/central Baja.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
