DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0245Z June 24, 2016
SMOKE: Southern California: A wildfire exploded in size this evening in north central Kern County of southern California resulting in a moderately dense to thick smoke which fanned out as it spread eastward. Northwestern to South Central Canada/North Central US: A large mass of leftover thin to moderately dense smoke was visible stretching from the Northwest Territories to Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario in south central Canada and across the border into the North Central US. This smoke was mainly attributed to wildfires burning earlier this week in the Northwest Territories to the southwest of Great Bear Lake. Northeast Wyoming/Northwest South Dakota/Eastern Montana/Western North Dakota: Thin density smoke from a fire burning in the Black Hills of northeastern Wyoming spread to the north and fanned out over northeastern Wyoming, northwestern South Dakota, eastern Montana, and western North Dakota. DUST: Nevada: A rather dense swath of blowing dust originated from a dry lake bed in north central Churchill County of west central Nevada after 21Z and continued as it spread to the northeast reaching northeastern Nevada by sunset. JS Earlier This Morning... Southwest US/Central Plains Wildfires in the southwestern US are responsible for a large area of thin density remnant smoke extending from the four corners region east over the central plains and into Illinois, Indiana, and western Kentucky. Ramirez THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/Products/land/hms.html GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
