DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0245Z June 25, 2016
SMOKE: California: The Erskin wildfire in Kern County, California is emitting a large area of thin density smoke which has moved to the east and east-northeast across southern Nevada, northwestern and northern Arizona, and southwestern Utah. Moderately dense to thick smoke located closer to the fire was spreading more to the east and southeast during the afternoon and early evening. Farther to the north, moderately dense to thick smoke was moving east over the border into west central Nevada from a fire located just west of Mono Lake in east central California. West Central to Southeastern Canada/Great Lakes Region to the Northeast: A very large area of remnant thin density smoke with patches of embedded moderately dense smoke persists over the southern portion of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut stretching over northern Alberta and Saskatchewan, as well as northern and central Manitoba. The smoke then extends southeast from there across much of Ontario and the southern half of Quebec to the Canadian Maritimes. Over the US, the smoke covers a good portion of the Great Lakes region and the Northeast. North Central US: An area of thin density aerosol which likely contains at least some smoke primarily from the fire burning in the Black Hills of northeastern Wyoming was visible from eastern Nebraska and western Iowa stretching northward over western Minnesota and a portion of the Dakotas. DUST: Nevada: A patch of thin density blowing dust originated from a dry lake bed in northern Churchill County of west central Nevada after 20Z and fanned out as it spread to the southeast. JS THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/Products/land/hms.html GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
