DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1830Z July 7, 2016

SMOKE:
Canada:
A large area of light density remnant smoke that has rotated
anti-cyclonically around a ridge positioned over north-central Canada
was seen from the western portions of the Northwest Territories east
across the Northwestern Passages, the northern half of Hudson Bay
in northern Quebec and Baffin Island. Another north-south oriented
swath of light density smoke generally moving west was connected to
the aforementioned area of smoke and spanned from the western portions
of the Northwestern Territories south through Alberta and southwestern
Saskatchewan with the southern portions of the smoke traveling east.
Moderate density smoke was embedded in this north-south oriented area
of smoke with another band of moderate density smoke seen from the
eastern portions of the Northwestern Territories east towards northwest
Quebec. All of this smoke originated from fires in northern Saskatchewan,
northern Manitoba and the Northwestern Territories over the last few days.
Light to moderate density smoke plumes were also seen southeast of Great
Bear Lake and were traveling towards the northwest.

DUST:
Caribbean Sea/Gulf of Mexico/Puerto Rice/Florida/Southeast US Coast:
An expansive area of optically thick Saharan dust continues to be seen
pushing westward across the Caribbean Sea to the Yucatan Peninsula.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
