DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z July 10, 2016

SMOKE:
Canada:
A broad area of mostly light density remnant smoke is observed stretching
across a large swath of northern Canada from the northwest portion of
the Northwest Territories east southeastward into central Nunavut and
much of Hudson Bay into northern Quebec.

Colorado and Wyoming:
Two fires in Colorado (Beaver Creek and Cold Springs) were generating
expansive smoke plumes that extended to the east and northeast into
northeast Colorado and and far southeast Wyoming. The Beaver Creek fire
in Jackson county had some moderate to dense smoke associated with it.

DUST:
Caribbean Sea and southern Gulf of Mexico:
A broad area of Saharan dust continues to be seen this evening across
the southwest half of the Gulf of Mexico, including the entire Bay of
Campeche. The dust also covers portions of the western Caribbean.

Nevada:
An expansive area of light to moderate blowing dust was originating from
the Carson Sink in western Nevada. The dust was moving to the east.

Southern California/Southwest Arizona:
A couple of areas of light blowing dust were detected in the desert areas
of southern California and into southwest Arizona. One area was in the
vicinity of the Salton Sea, another was south of Bishop California in
Inyo county and a third moving across western Maricopa county in Arizona.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
