DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300 Z July 11, 2016

SMOKE:
Canada:
Several wildfires in Central Quebec are producing light to moderate
density smoke that is traveling predominantly towards the east-southeast.

Colorado and Wyoming:
Several wildfires in Central Colorado are producing heavy density smoke
that is traveling towards the northeast. The fire in the northern portion
of Colorado near the Wyoming border (Beaver Creek fire) is producing
heavy density smoke that is stretching into southeast Wyoming. A wildfire
that exploded this afternoon about 115 km southwest of Colorado Springs
was producing very thick smoke that was moving mostly to the east and
reaching the Kansas border by sunset.

DUST:
Western Gulf of Mexico into the southern Plains:
A broad area of Saharan dust continues to be seen this evening across
the western half of the Gulf of Mexico, including the entire Bay of
Campeche. The dust then extends northward across much of central Texas
and into central Kansas.

Nevada/Utah:
A broad area of light to moderate blowing dust was seen from the Carson
Sink in western Nevada and was moving to the east, reaching the Utah
border by sunset. A smaller area of light blowing dust was moving south
from the Bonneville Salt Flats in northwest Utah.

Four Corners:
An area of light blowing dust was seen aligned from southwest to
northeast in the vicinity of the Four Corners, from northeast Arizona
into southwest Colorado.

Southern California to southwest Arizona:
Several small patches of light blowing dust were observed over the
deserts of southern California and extending into far southwest Arizona.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
