DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0245Z July 26, 2016

Smoke:
California to the Northern and Central Plains:
An expansive area of remnant smoke that has accumulated from the
past several days of burning was seen this evening covering most of
California and extends to the northeast across much of Nevada, western
Utah, much of Wyoming, southeast Montana and into the western Dakotas
and central Nebraska and Kansas. Much of this smoke is light density but
there are areas of moderate to dense smoke near the fires. The largest,
most active fires are in western Wyoming, southern California (north of
Los Angeles) and central coastal California (south of Monterey). A small
patch of light remnant smoke is visible in southern Northwest Territories
moving south towards the Alberta boarder. Due to heavy cloud coverage,
it is difficult to determine the full extent of the smoke.

Idaho:
The Pioneer wildfire in Boise county continues to burn and generate an
area of light to moderately dense smoke that is drifting to the east
and southeast.

Oregon:
A fire in Wasco county in north central Oregon was producing an area of
light dense smoke that that was moving to the south southeast.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
