DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1730Z July 27, 2016

Smoke:
Area from Idaho to the Northern and Central Plains:
The Pioneer wildfire in Boise county is still burning resulting in the
production of a moderate smoke plume around the fire with the surrounding
area having lots of light density smoke that extended eastward combining
with the smoke originating from Wyoming. The smoke attributed primarily
to the large wildfires in western Wyoming were producing light to
moderate density smoke, where the moderate density smoke fanned out to
the east. Thinner density smoke from both the Idaho and Wyoming fires
is visible extending eastward through northern Colorado, Nebraska,
northern Kansas and into western Missouri. Due to some cloud coverage in
the central plains, it is difficult to determine the full extent of smoke.

California:
A large region of thin density smoke from the large fires burning south
of Monterey along the central California coast covered a large portion
of central California and in to NW Nevada. A small amount of moderate
density smoke is visible around the wildfire.

Western Canada:
Fires in central Northwest Territories are producing light density
smoke mainly around the fires. Another patch of thin density smoke is
visible in southern Northwest Territories and its boarders with Alberta
and Saskatchewan. Due to some cloud coverage in the central plains,
it is difficult to determine the full extent of smoke.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
