DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1900Z July 31, 2016

SMOKE:
California to the Central Plains:
Several large wildfires in the western US (particularly south of Monterey
in CA, north of Reno in western NV and west of Stanley ID) were producing
large light smoke that have spread and cover much of the western US
and extends into the central Plains.  Moderate density smoke was over
portions of southern Montana, northern Wyoming and southern Idaho.

Pacific Northwest:
An area of remnant smoke from the fire over southern Washington extending
from southern Alberta through western Montana northern Idaho and southern
Washington.

Northern and Central Canada:
A broad area of light smoke was seen across northern and central Canada
from fires over northern Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories and
from Russia.  The smoke extended from portions of western Quebec and
Ontario northwest to Nunavut, northern Manitoba, northern Saskatchewan,
northern Alberta, the Northwest Territories, northern British Columbia
to the Yukon.

Alaska:
An area of remnant smoke believed to be from fires over Russia was seen
over portions of northern Alaska and the Arctic Ocean.

OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
