DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0030Z August 7, 2016
SMOKE: Great Lakes: An area of light density remnant smoke from the active wildfires across the western US was moving east across Wisconsin, Great Lakes, Michigan and southeastern Ontario. Due to heavy cloud coverage, it is difficult to see the full extent of the smoke that was present earlier this morning. Northern Canada: An area of remnant smoke is seen moving across eastern Manitoba, northwest Ontario and into southern Hudson Bay. The full extent of the smoke is obscured by heavy cloud coverage. California/Idaho/Washington: The fires in central California are producing light to heavy density smoke moving northeast into western Nevada. The fires in central Idaho are also producing light density smoke heading north, while the fires in Washington are producing light density smoke, mainly staying in central Washington. Kemal EARLIER TODAY: SMOKE: Western US/Northern Plains/Northern Mississippi Valley/Southern Canada: An area of remnant thin smoke from active wildfires across the western US was moving across parts of southern British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. In the US, smoke is seen over northern/eastern Montana, North Dakota, northeast South Dakota, Minnesota, northeast Iowa and Wisconsin. Cloud cover across Idaho and western Montana obscures the full view of smoke in the region. A small patch between the clouds is seen in central Idaho. Northern Canada: An area of remnant smoke is seen moving across parts of northern Alberta, Saskatchewan, northern/central Manitoba and parts of northwest Ontario. Some heavier patches are seen in extreme northeast Alberta, northwest Saskatchewan, northeast Manitoba and western Hudson Bay. J Kibler THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/Products/land/hms.html GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
