DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z September 3, 2016

SMOKE:
Area from Northern California to Montana and South Central Canada:
Moderately dense to thick smoke from the Gap wildfire in far northern
California spread eastward during the day across northern California. A
larger surrounding regionof thin density smoke from this fire extended
to the northeast over northern Nevada and southeastern Oregon and into
Idaho where it combined with thin to moderately dense smoke from other
wildfires in Idaho, western Montana, and northwestern Wyoming. The
smoke then stretched much farther to the northeast over Montana and into
Saskatchewan in south central Canada.

South Central Canada/Central and South Central US:
A very large detached batch of thin to moderately dense smoke attributed
to the ongoing wildfire activity in the Western US described in the
paragraph above was seen throughout the day over much of south central
Canada from Saskatchewan eastward to western Quebec. The smoke also
covered portions of the Central US from the Dakotas, Minnesota, and
the Great Lakes Region southward to Oklahoma, Arkansas, and the Lower
Mississippi Valley.

UNKNOWN AEROSOL:
A swath of unknown aerosol extended from the western Florida Panhandle
westward over southern Louisiana and the northwestern Gulf of Mexico
and back inland over a good portion of Texas. It is not known how much
if any of this aerosol is composed of smoke.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
