DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z September 10, 2016

SMOKE:
California:
Light to heavy density smoke was seen fanning to the south from the Gap
fire in far northern California while a light to moderate density smoke
plume was seen traveling north from the Soberanes fire in Monterey county
near the coast. Light density remnant smoke from both of these fires
continues to be observed over Central Valley banked along the Sierra
Nevada mountains.

Intermountain West:
Multiple light to moderate density smoke plumes were seen traveling east
from fires throughout southern Utah, northern Arizona, western Colorado
and south-central Wyoming. A notable smoke plume was being emitted by
the Lost Solar fire in Rio Blanco county Colorado.

Lower Mississippi River Valley:
Numerous agricultural and prescribed burns were seen throughout the
Lower Mississippi River Valley. Several pockets of light density smoke
were seen in eastern Arkansas, southeast Missouri, southern Illinois
and western Kentucky although clouds obscured the full extent of these
areas of smoke.

DUST:
Texas/Southwestern Gulf of Mexico
An area of Saharan dust was seen over the western Gulf of Mexico extending
north into portions of southern and south central Texas.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
