DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1745Z October 1, 2016

Northern Gulf:
An area of remnant thin smoke is mixed among the clouds in the northern
Gulf of Mexico. This remnant smoke is likely from numerous agricultural
burn fires in the southern US.

Labrador Sea:
Thin remnant smoke could be seen drifting east across the Labrador Sea,
the coast of Labrador, and northern Newfoundland. This thin smoke may
be from fires in Asia.

British Columbia Coast/Gulf of Alaska:
Remnant smoke from Asia could be seen along the western coast of Canada
and along the coast of southeast Alaska.

Caribbean:
African dust is present from the Leeward Islands west into Hurricane
Matthew. The dust is consolidated south of Puerto Rico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
