DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z October 26, 2016
SMOKE: Middle and Lower Mississippi Valley: Similar to the past few days, numerous seasonal agricultural fires were detected over southeastern Missouri, eastern Arkansas, and northwestern Mississippi which resulted in quite a few individual thin density smoke plumes which congealed into slightly larger patches of smoke spreading mainly to the southwest and west. Louisiana: A cluster of seasonal fires over southern Louisiana produced a number of small thin density smoke plumes which moved primarily to the west. Northwestern US/Southwestern Canada: Once again, a large number of fires were analyzed especially over northern Idaho, western Oregon, western Washington, and British Columbia in southwestern Canada though little or no smoke was seen due to widespread cloudiness passing over the area. GLACIAL FLOUR: Southern Alaska/Gulf of Alaska: Satellite imagery continued to show airborne glacial flour spreading to the south from the Copper River Valley in southeastern Alaska and offshore over the Gulf of Alaska where it fanned out both to the east and to the west. JS THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/Products/land/hms.html GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
