DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z January 22, 2017

SMOKE:
Florida...
A number of fires with only one visible plume of thin density smoke plumes
was visible in GOES imagery during the day over the south central Florida
peninsula with the smoke moving in an north north easterly direction
from the fire with smoke.

Mexico: A large swath of smoke originating from fires in north central
Mexico is blowing east north east towards Texas.  The smoke was still
attached as of sunset and had already crossed the border.

DUST:

Mexico: In combination with the above mentioned smoke, blowing dust was
also observed combining with the smoke to form a large plume that was
headed east north east into Texas.

OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
