DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z March 22 2017

SMOKE:
Southern Plains/Middle and Lower Mississippi Valley/Southeast:
A large amount of burning across the above mentioned region with many
of the fires most likely agricultural in nature producing light to
moderately dense smoke plumes. Across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and
Louisiana the smoke is heading toward the northeast with some emitting
moderately dense plumes. As you move eastward over Mississippi, Alabama,
Georgia and South Carolina smoke is moving toward the east with fires
in South Carolina, the smoke is moving quite far into the Atlantic.

One of the larger fires (wildfire) is located in southern Collier county
in southwest Florida. This wildfire is producing a tremendous amount of
moderately dense smoke toward the west into the eastern Gulf of Mexico.
Also, some larger burning fires are located along the Florida Panhandle
and the coast of Alabama and Mississippi. Also, along the South
Carolina coast.

Offshore Southeast United States to the Northeast Gulf of Mexico:
An area of remnant smoke from fires over the Southeast United States
and southern Plains is extending from just offshore of the Carolinas
southwest through northern Florida and into the northeast Gulf of Mexico.

Also, a large area of residual smoke from fires burning in the Yucatan
Peninsula extends northward from the Bay of Campeche to offshore
southeast Texas.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
