DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2345Z April 6, 2017

SMOKE:
Bay of Campeche/Gulf of Mexico/Florida
Remnant thin smoke continues to be seen across southern reaches of the
Gulf of Mexico and extending over south Florida and the Florida Straights
into the Bahamas. This smoke is mostly from seasonal burning across the
Yucatan and Central America which has become embedded in a frontal zone
laying across the region.

Central Plains
A large number of fires across the Flint Hills of eastern Kansas and
Oklahoma were observed this afternoon and evening. Smoke associated
with these fires has congealed into a mass of light to moderately dense
smoke that covers much of the region. The smoke was mostly moving to
the south southeast.

Louisiana and East Texas
Some large fires were observed far eastern Texas and southwest Louisiana
which produced areas of moderately dense to dense smoke that was moving
to the south into the northeast Gulf of Mexico.

DUST:
Caribbean into the southern Gulf of Mexico
The large expanse of persistent Saharan dust continues to be seen this
afternoon and evening over much of the Caribbean and has been drawn north
into a frontal zone over the southern Gulf of Mexico where it was mixing
with smoke as noted above.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
