SMOKE: Bay of Campeche/Gulf of Mexico/Florida Remnant thin smoke continues to be seen across southern reaches of the Gulf of Mexico and extending over south Florida and the Florida Straights into the Bahamas. This smoke is mostly from seasonal burning across the Yucatan and Central America which has become embedded in a frontal zone laying across the region. Central Plains A large number of fires across the Flint Hills of eastern Kansas and Oklahoma were observed this afternoon and evening. Smoke associated with these fires has congealed into a mass of light to moderately dense smoke that covers much of the region. The smoke was mostly moving to the south southeast. Louisiana and East Texas Some large fires were observed far eastern Texas and southwest Louisiana which produced areas of moderately dense to dense smoke that was moving to the south into the northeast Gulf of Mexico. DUST: Caribbean into the southern Gulf of Mexico The large expanse of persistent Saharan dust continues to be seen this afternoon and evening over much of the Caribbean and has been drawn north into a frontal zone over the southern Gulf of Mexico where it was mixing with smoke as noted above.
