DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z April 22, 2017

SMOKE:
Florida...
The Parliament fire located in Collier County of southwestern Florida
continued to burn through the day emitting moderately dense to locally
thick smoke which moved to the west and off the coast over the eastern
Gulf of Mexico. The Smoke then thinned out as it fanned out spreading
farther to the northwest nearly reaching the central Gulf Coast region.

Bay of Campeche...Smoke from the ongoing seasonal fires in southern
and southeastern Mexico and Central America was confined to the Bay of
Campeche, overland across southern and southeastern Mexico, and out over
the Pacific off the southern Mexico coast.

DUST:
New Mexico/Texas...
A thin density aerosol which may be leftover blowing dust was seen over
northeastern New Mexico, as well as northern and western Texas. Cloudiness
farther to the north though limited detection over far northwestern Texas,
and Oklahoma.

Earlier This Morning...
AEROSOL:
An area of unknown aerosol was observed this morning off Western and
Baja California over the Pacific Ocean. The NASA GMAO 2D model suggests
the aerosol is blowing dust originating from Asia. The air mass is seen
moving towards the south and along the coast.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
