DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z April 29, 2017
SMOKE: Gulf of Mexico/Texas/Louisiana... A large mass of thin to moderately dense smoke from the ongoing seasonal fires occurring in southeastern Mexico and Central America was visible this morning covering the Bay of Campeche and the western half of the Gulf of Mexico as well as southern and southeastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana. The smoke very well may extend farther inland to the north but cloudiness is preventing smoke detection in this area from satellite imagery. South and North Carolina/Southeastern Virginia/Western Atlantic.... Possible remnant smoke from the seasonal burning in Mexico and Central America as well as from the West Mims fire was seen this morning extending from the Carolinas and southeastern Virginia northeastward to well off the Mid-Atlantic coast. DUST: Southwestern US/Northwestern Mexico/Eastern Pacific... A thin density aerosol which is possibly composed at least in part by remnant blowing dust could be seen over the Pacific off the coast of southern California and over portions of Baja and northwestern Mexico. Widespread cloudiness across New Mexico and western Texas is preventing dust detection in that region from satellite imagery. JS THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/Products/land/hms.html GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
