DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0157Z May 13, 2017

SMOKE:
Atlantic Ocean extending west into the Southeast....
A large area of light density smoke extended from the central Atlantic
Ocean from just south of Bermuda west towards the coast of the Southeast
United States. The source of this smoke is the West Mims wildfire over
far southern Georgia and fire activity over the Southeast over the past
few days.

Northern Plains....
An area of light density smoke from fire activity over the Northern
Plains and South Central Canada, and even some contributions from fire
activity over the Pacific Northwest, extended from northern Wisconsin,
northern Minnesota and northeastern North Dakota west northwest through
southwest Ontario and southern Manitoba.

Upper Midwest to the Southern Plains....
An area of light density smoke extended from the upper Midwest near
central Michigan and southern Wisconsin southwest through the Southern
Plains to northern Texas. The source region of this smoke is believed
to be a combination of fires over southern Canada and the Northern Plains
along with fire activity over the Southern Plains and Mexico.

Gulf of Mexico....
A large area of thin density smoke from fires in Mexico and the Yucatan
Peninsula extends from the northern Gulf of Mexico southwest to east
and southeast Mexico.

Georgia...
The West Mims wildfire continues to burn creating moderate smoke plumes
the were observed traveling east out into the Atlantic.

Mexico...
Fires in south west Chihuahua, north west Durango, and eastern Sinaloa
were producing light to moderate amounts of smoke that was traveling
north east towards Texas.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
