DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z May 19, 2017

SMOKE:
Florida...
Fires located in Highlands and Glades county are producing light to
moderately dense smoke that was observed to extend Westward and out and
over the Gulf of Mexico. The plumes remained attached during nightfall.

Arizona...
The wildfire near Globe, AZ in Southern Gila county continues to produce
light to moderately dense smoke. The smoke plume remains concentrated
and attached while extending East and across New Mexico's Western border.

Texas/Gulf of Mexico/Arkansas/Louisiana...
A large area of remnant smoke covers the entire Western Gulf of Mexico
and much of Southeastern Texas. As the smoke mostly creeps Westward and
further into Northwestern Texas it also extends towards the North and
into parts of Southwestern Arkansas and Western Louisiana.

DUST:
Southwest US/northern Mexico...
An area of light blowing dust was seen originating in Chihuahua in
northern Mexico and moving to the east into the El Paso area.

A plume of light dust was seen extending east from the Willcox Playa in
southeast AZ into southwest NM.

A broad area of light to moderately dense smoke was generated along the
southern CA/NV border from strong winds associated with a strong storm
system. The blowing dust swept southward across the deserts of southeast
California by sunset.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
