DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1800Z June 16, 2017

SMOKE:

Arizona/New Mexico/Oklahoma/Kansas/Texas...
Light smoke from numerous wildfires in Arizona and New Mexico extends from
central Arizona and across much of New Mexico into the Texas Panhandle,
western Oklahoma and extreme southwest Kansas. There are smaller areas
of moderate to dense smoke in the vicinity of the fires, especially in
the valleys and drainage areas near the fires.

Mexico...
Numerous fires burning over northwestern Mexico, especially in Sonora
and Chihuahua states, continue to contribute to the smoke from previous
days in the region. A broad area of light to moderately dense smoke
covered much of northwest Mexico and extended south and west to the
Pacific coast and extending well off the coast into the southern Gulf
of California and the open Pacific. A narrow plume of the smoke also
extended east to the Big Bend area of Texas.

Alaska and Yukon...
Remnant light smoke from a fire in west central Yukon Territory was seen
this morning extending from the far northwest portion of the Northwest
Territories southwest across the northern Yukon Territory and into
southeast Alaska.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
