DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0000Z June 19, 2017

SMOKE:

Arizona/New Mexico:
Wildfire burning in southern Graham county in Arizona is producing mostly
moderate to dense plume smoke. The smoke is moving west across Maircopa,
Pima and Pinal counties.

A wildfire burning in south central Coconino county is producing an
area of light to moderately dense smoke fanning northeast to easterly
with also lighter smoke moving westerly. Smoke is mostly remaining in
county, but beginning to reach the border of Navajo county.

Additional fires can be seen burning across southwest New Mexico and
other sections of Arizona producing light to moderate smoke.

Yukon Territory...
Fires were observed in north west Yukon Territory producing smoke plumes
traveling east to south east.

Mexico...
Numerous fires were seen burning over northwestern Mexico, especially
in Sonora and Chihuahua states continue to produce smoke. The light to
moderately dense smoke from these fires predominantly extend south west.

Dust:
An long narrow strip of possible dust can be seen stretching from
southeast New Mexico across the Texas Panhandle, central Oklahoma and
into southeast Kansas. The eastern edge of the possible dust is moving
southeast and western edge moving north.

Dust may be mixing in with lighter smoke across parts of northern/central
Arizona.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
