DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z June 20, 2017

SMOKE:
Western High Plains...
A patch of possible leftover thin density smoke attributed primarily to
wildfire activity over the Southwestern US was visible spreading slowly to
the east stretching from western Nebraska southward over western Kansas,
far eastern Colorado, western Oklahoma, northeastern New Mexico, and
northwestern Texas.

Southwestern US/Western Mexico...
A large mass of thin density smoke could be seen over western Mexico,
the Gulf of California, and Baja with the smoke also visible over
southeastern California, much of Arizona, and southern Nevada. This
large area of smoke was due to a combination of ongoing fire activity
over western and northwestern Mexico as well as wildfires burning in
Arizona and southern California. Patches of moderately dense to thick
smoke due primarily to the Frye Fire in Graham County of southeastern
Arizona were seen over southeastern Arizona and east central Arizona.

Alaska/Northwestern Canada...
An area of thin to perhaps moderately dense smoke attributed to wildfires
burning over the Yukon in northwestern Canada was visible moving to the
west from the western Yukon into northeastern Alaska. Another elongated
swath of leftover thin density smoke from the Yukon fires could be seen
extending from near the northern coast of the Yukon southeastward over
the Northwest Territories.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
