DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1800Z July 3, 2017

SMOKE:
Alaska/Canada:
Fires over the Yukon and Northwest Territories continue to emit
smoke, which is observed advecting toward the west over the Yukon and
Alaska. This smoke layer is fairly thin.

Pacific Northwest:
The smoke plume associated with the Sutherland Canyon fire in
south-central Washington State was observed being advected toward
the west over southeastern Washignton State, northern Idaho, and far
northwestern Montana.

Southwest US:
Various fires located throughout the Four Corners states are contributing
to three separate areas of lofted smoke located over the southwestern
United States. The Brianhead Fire is contributing to smoke seen over
southeastern Utah, extreme northwestern Arizona, and northern New Mexico,
the Goodwin Fire is contributing to the smoke layer over northern Arizona
and far west central New Mexico, and the Frye, Burro, and Hilltop Fires
are contributing to the smoke layer over southeastern Arizona and southern
New Mexico.

San Joaquin Valley
A tenuous layer of remnant smoke was observed this morning over the San
Joaquin Valley in central California.

DUST:
Saharan dust continued to be observed over the Gulf Coast, most dense
over the Louisiana coast.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
