DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z July 10, 2017

SMOKE

ALASKA / WESTERN CANADA:
Wildfires located near the Alaskan-Yukon border continue to produce light
to moderately dense smoke that stretches across Northern Alaska and into
much of the Northwestern Territories. Moderate density remnant smoke was
visible over the Northwestern Territories, Alberta, and Saskatchewan
this evening. Numerous fires located throughout British Columbia are
producing smoke ranging from light to heavily dense. This smoke is being
carried towards the northeast before combining with the remnant smoke
originating from fires in Alaska.

NORTHERN PLAINS:
Fires located in Southeastern Montana and in Western North Dakota
are generating smoke that combine to blanket much of Northern South
Dakota. Moderately dense smoke was visible along Montana's southeastern
border.

WESTERN U.S.:
The Alamo fire continues to produce smoke that is carried northward and
up California. Moderately dense smoke remains within the vicinity of
their sources. Remnant light density smoke combines with fires located in
Northern California, Southern Oregon, and Western Nevada. Light density
smoke covers much of the same area.

UKNOWN AEROSOL
An unknown aerosol was seen to move eastward and across the Southeastern
States of Alabama, Georgia, Northern Florida, and South Carolina this
evening.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
