DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 16000Z July 11, 2017

SMOKE

NORTHERN NORTH AMERICA..
Wildfires throughout Alaska, the Yukon, the Northwest Territory, and
British Columbia continue to burn, producing smoke that can be seen
across much of northern North America, from Barrow, Alaska and the
Beaufort Sea to off the eastern Newfoundland coast. The densest smoke
is seen over southern British Columbia where one of the two large fire
complexes resides, with a few embedded streams of moderately dense smoke.

NEVADA / UTAH / WYOMING...
Wildfires located in Northern Nevada are producing smoke that extends
eastward across northeastern Nevada, northern Utah, and much of
Wyoming. Some heavy density smoke was visible and remained attached to
the fires in Nevada, with some remnant streams of heavy smoke near the
leading edge of the smoke plume.

CALIFORNIA...
The Alamo fire is providing a fairly thin layer of smoke extending out
over the Channel Islands and into the open Pacific while also extending
out over the southern San Joaquin Valley and the mountain ranges of
southern California.

DUST

CARIBBEAN...
A Saharan Dust Layer can be observed over the Caribbean Sea south and
east of a Honduras – Haiti line extending eastward to an Orinoco River
Delta – Barbados – 100 miles northeast of Antigua line. This dust
layer is moving westward.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
