DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z July 15, 2017

SMOKE....

Alaska/Canada/the Midwest:
Fires continue to burn and produce an abundant amount of smoke across
portions of northeastern Alaska, Yukon Territory, Northwest Territories,
and British Columbia. Light to moderate density remnant smoke from these
fires covers most of Alaska, most of Canada, and down into the Upper and
Lower Mississippi Valley of the United States. Heavy density smoke was
attached to the actual fires in British Columbia, northeastern Alaska,
and the Yukon Territory. An area of heavy remnant density smoke from
the previously mentioned fires was seen extending from the southeastern
Northwest Territories to the west/southwest into northern Saskatchewan,
northern Manitoba, and east-central Ontario.

The western United States:
An area of light remnant smoke from fires burning in Southern California
and Nevada was seen extending into portions of extreme northwestern
Utah, western Idaho, northern Nevada, eastern Oregon, and eastern
Washington. An area of moderate density smoke was observed near fires
in Southern California.

DUST....

Caribbean....
An area of Saharan dust extended through the Caribbean Sea towards
Central America and the Yucatan.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
