DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0115Z July 23, 2017

SMOKE:
Alaska and Yukon...
Wildfires across central Alaska are producing light density smoke that
extend southward and into the Gulf of Alaska and eastward into the
southwestern portion of the Yukon Territory.

Canada and Northeastern US...
A large area of light density remnant smoke continues to cover much of
central Canada. The smoke is being carried east and into the US. The
smoke continues to be seen stretched over the area between Ohio and Maine
before carried farther east out and over the Atlantic Ocean. Moderately
dense smoke is visible in imagery this evening originating from the
wildfires located in the northern parts of Alberta, Saskatchewan,
Manitoba, and Ontario.

Central-North US...
Wildfires along the Idaho/Montana border continue to burn through
this evening producing some visible moderately dense smoke plumes that
extend towards the East. The larger fires located in Garfield County,
Montana are producing moderate smoke that extends close to Montana's
eastern border. Think smoke extends from the states and into Wyoming,
the Dakotas, Nebraska and as far as central Indiana.

California...
Remnant light density smoke was observed over much of California's Central
Valley as the Detwiler fire located in central part of the state continues
to burn.

DUST:
Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico....
Saharan dust is visible over the Caribbean Sea and the entire southern
portion of the Gulf of Mexico. Portions of southern Florida may also
be affected.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
