DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1930Z July 23, 2017
SMOKE: Alaska and Yukon... Due to heavy cloud cover smoke could not be seen in this mornings imagery although several wildfires were observed burning in central Alaska. Canada and Northeastern US... A large area of light density remnant smoke continues to cover much of central Canada. The smoke was observed traveling eastward across the Hudson Bay but could not be observed any further east due to cloud cover. It is likely the smoke extends to the Northeast US. Central-North US... Wildfires along the Idaho/Montana border were observed continuing to produce smoke of light to moderate density traveling northeast. The larger fires located in Garfield County, Montana are producing moderate smoke that extends north east but is being pushed south by a high pressure ridge. The smoke extended from Montana into Saskatchewan and Manitoba. It was then observed to be pushed south into the Dakotas, Nebraska, and Iowa. California... No smoke or fires were detected in this mornings images near the Detwiler fire location, there were clouds covering the area. News reports indicate fire crews are getting the fire under control. DUST: Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.... Saharan dust is visible over the Caribbean Sea and the entire southern portion of the Gulf of Mexico. Portions of southern Florida may also be affected. -Westbrook THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED.
