DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1930Z July 23, 2017

SMOKE:
Alaska and Yukon...
Due to heavy cloud cover smoke could not be seen in this mornings imagery
although several wildfires were observed burning in central Alaska.

Canada and Northeastern US...
A large area of light density remnant smoke continues to cover much
of central Canada. The smoke was observed traveling eastward across
the Hudson Bay but could not be observed any further east due to cloud
cover. It is likely the smoke extends to the Northeast US.

Central-North US...
Wildfires along the Idaho/Montana border were observed continuing to
produce smoke of light to moderate density traveling northeast. The
larger fires located in Garfield County, Montana are producing moderate
smoke that extends north east but is being pushed south by a high pressure
ridge. The smoke extended from Montana into Saskatchewan and Manitoba. It
was then observed to be pushed south into the Dakotas, Nebraska, and Iowa.

California...
No smoke or fires were detected in this mornings images near the Detwiler
fire location, there were clouds covering the area. News reports indicate
fire crews are getting the fire under control.

DUST:
Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico....
Saharan dust is visible over the Caribbean Sea and the entire southern
portion of the Gulf of Mexico. Portions of southern Florida may also
be affected.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
