DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1800Z July 29, 2017

SMOKE:
Area from Southwestern to Central, South Central, and Southeastern
Canada/Area from the Northwestern US across the North Central US to
the Northeast...
A very large mass of thin density smoke covers much of southwestern,
central, and south central Canada as well as the northern US from
Oregon and far northern California to northern New England. This smoke
is attributed to wildfire activity especially over portions of Manitoba,
Ontario, the southern part of the Northwest Territories and southwestern
British Columbia in Canada as well as wildfires in Montana, northern
Idaho, northern Washington, southern Oregon, and northern California in
the US. Patches of embedded moderately dense smoke were visible in the
large regions from southern British Columbia to central Ontario and from
northern California to central Montana. Thick smoke was noted particularly
in southern and southeastern British Columbia and west-central Alberta
which was primarily from the wildfires in British Columbia. Very localized
thicker smoke was visible closer to some of the other wildfires in the
Northwestern US.

Alaska:
A large fire complex in east central Alaska was responsible for an area
of varying density smoke which covered a portion of north central Alaska
and extended to the north offshore over the Arctic.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
