DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z July 30, 2017

SMOKE:
Southwestern to Central, South Central, and Southeastern
Canada/Northwestern US across the North Central US to the Northeast:
A very large mass of thin density smoke covers much of southwestern,
central, and south central Canada as well as the northern US from
Oregon and far northern California to northern New England. This smoke
is attributed to wildfire activity especially over portions of Manitoba,
Ontario, the southern part of the Northwest Territories and southwestern
British Columbia in Canada as well as wildfires in Montana, northern
Idaho, northern Washington, southern Oregon, and northern California in
the US.
Areas of moderately dense to very dense smoke extend across sections
of central/eastern British Columbia into southern/central sections of
Alberta and Saskatchewan. In the Northwest US areas of heavier smoke
can be seen over northern California, southern/eastern Oregon, southwest
Idaho and across western Montana where numerous wildfires are burning.
Light smoke spreads as far east the Great Lakes regions e-ward into the
Northeastern US and far south as South Dakota and beginning to reach
Indiana/Ohio border.

Alaska:
A large fire complex in east central Alaska is producing an area of
moderately dense to dense smoke to the north across a portion of north
central Alaska. Lighter density smoke extends farther north offshore
into the Beaufort Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
