DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2030Z August 5, 2017

SMOKE:
Fires in British Columbia and Oregon continue to produce large quantities
of smoke that are observed blanketing the Northwest. The smoke is
traveling in a southeastern direction but the full extent could not be
observed due to heavy cloud cover.

Northern to Central Canada...
Wildfires are scattered across a broad area from eastern Northwest
Territories to northern Saskatchewan, Manitoba and western Ontario. Smoke
from these fires covers much of eastern Northwest Territories, Nunavut,
northern Alberta, northeast Saskatchewan. The southern extent could not
be seen due to clouds.

DUST:
Caribbean...
A large area of light Saharan dust is seen over the eastern Gulf of
Mexico stretching across the Florida peninsula and Cuba to the Bahamas,
Dominican Republic and eastward.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
