DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1830Z August 7, 2017

SMOKE:
Pacific Northwest to New England....
Remnant smoke from wildfires in southern British Columbia combine with
smoke from fires located near the Idaho-Montana state border to produce
a light density mass that stretches from the Pacific Northwest, through
the Central Plains, Ohio Valley, and farther east into New England this
morning. Moderately dense smoke was observed over the eastern half of
Washington state, northeastern Oregon, much of Idaho and Wyoming, while
a small extent was visible over western Nebraska.

Central and Southern Canada....
Wildfires in southern British Columbia continued to burn through this
morning producing heavily dense smoke that was seen to blanket the area. A
light density smoke artery extended towards the east across southern
Alberta, central Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and into Ontario. This smoke
combined with that produced by fires located in central Ontario. Heavy
smoke was observed to extend northward across Hudson bay with light to
moderately dense smoke covering much of the surrounding area.

DUST:
Caribbean...
An area of light density Saharan dust covered a portion of the southwest
Atlantic extending from Florida's western coast to south of Bermuda
this morning.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
