DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z August 10, 2017

SMOKE:
British Columbia/Alberta/Nova Scotia/United States....
A large remnant plume of light density smoke from fires burning in British
Columbia extended south and southeastward into the United States. The
plume encompassed the Pacific Northwest, Northern Intermountain,
Northern Rockies, Central Plains, Middle Mississippi Valley, and parts
of the Southern Plains/Lower Mississippi Valley/Tennessee Valley/Ohio
Valley/Southern Appalachians/Mid-Atlantic/Central Appalachians. Another
large area of light density remnant smoke stretched from Ohio eastward
across the Ohio Valley/Central Appalachians/Mid-Atlantic and offshore
before turning toward the northeast and crossed in Nova Scotia. A large
area of moderate density smoke from the previously mentioned fires covered
portions of British Columbia, Pacific Northwest, Northern Intermountain,
Northern Rockies, and the Central Plains. Most of British Columbia was
covered in heavy density smoke near the fires burning there. Several
areas of heavy density smoke were also seen covering portions of
Nebraska/Washington/Idaho/Montana.

Northern Canada...
Light to moderate density smoke covered a good portion of northern Canada
from fires burning in the Yukon Territory. The smoke extended from the
Yukon through the Northwest Territories to northern Saskatchewan and
northern Manitoba.

Davis Strait...

Smoke from an extremely unusual fire on Greenland's west coast was seen
drifting to the west across the Davis Straight toward the east coast
of Nunavut.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
