DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0115Z August 12, 2017

SMOKE:
Western and Central Canada, Northwest US, Inter-mountain, North and
Central Rockies, and Plains...
Numerous wildfires in south-central British Columbia continue to burn
through this evening producing light to heavily dense smoke. Heavy smoke
was visible over much of the central portion of the providence. Wildfires
located in southern Northwest Territories are also producing localized
heavy smoke. Moderate smoke from fires in British Columbia combines
with smoke from fires to the southwest in Idaho and Montana extending
across the states and as far east as central South Dakota. In northern
Canada the moderate smoke covers the southern Northwest Territories while
extending eastward into central Saskatchewan and central Manitoba. Thin
smoke blankets western and central Canada, extending east as far as
western Ontario. The smoke also encompassed the Pacific Northwest,
Inter-mountain region, North and Central Rockies, and the Northern and
Central Plains this evening.

Northern Canada...
An area of light dense smoke can be seen extending east across northern
sections of Yukon and Northwest Territories and into Nunavut. The smoke
is from wildfires burning over northern sections of the territories.

California:
Several fires are burning across the state producing localized light to
moderately dense smoke plumes.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
