DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130 August 13, 2017

SMOKE
Canada...
An exceptional number of wildfires continue to burn throughout western and
central Canada producing varieties of dense smoke. Heavy concentrations
of fires are located in south-central British Columbia and the southern
area of the Northwestern Territories while other fires are scattered
throughout central Canada. An area of heavy smoke covers the British
Columbia and Alberta border while stretching northward into the Northwest
Territories. A patch of heavy smoke is also visible over the large
cluster of fires in the southern portion of the territory. Moderate
smoke wraps around from western Canada to the north and then to central
Canada. Light smoke covers much of the same area and extends over Ontario,
and into western Quebec.

U.S....
Remnant smoke from the Canadian fires has mixed with smoke from the
numerous fires in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, northern California and
western Montana and covers a large swath of the US. The smoke extends
from most of Washington and central Oregon eastward across northern and
central Idaho, western and southern Montana and into the northern and
central Plains. The most dense smoke was seen over northern Washington
extending into northern Idaho and western Montana.

Patches of light density smoke was seen over northern California due to
fires burning in that region.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
