SMOKE:
Northern US...
Fires in northern California and western Oregon are producing light
to moderately dense smoke that extends southwestward over the Pacific
Ocean following the coastline and towards the northeast combining with
smoke from fires located in Idaho and Montana. Much of the Northern US
from Idaho to Maine and as far south as southern Virginia is blanketed
with thin smoke. This smoke is visible also visible offshore over the
western Atlantic Ocean. A patch of moderately dense smoke was visible
over western Ohio. Moderate smoke originating from fires in Canada extend
over much of New England.

weeks continues to be visible over much of eastern Canada. Light smoke
covers an area that includes eastern Saskatchewan, southeast Northwest
Territories, southern Nunavut, all of Manitoba, all of Ontario, western
Quebec and nearly all of Hudson Bay. A large area of moderately dense
smoke was over western Hudson Bay, extending through Manitoba and and
into southern Ontario.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
