DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z August 26, 2017

SMOKE:
Northern US...
A large area of mostly light smoke was seen extending across the entire
northern portion of the US from northern California and Oregon eastward
across the northern Rockies into the northern and central Plains,
the upper Mississippi Valley and across the Great Lakes and upper Ohio
Valley to the mid Atlantic and New England and then off the coast. There
are patches of moderately dense smoke over northern New York and across
southern New England. Several areas of moderate to dense smoke were also
seen near the wildfires in Oregon and northern California. The smoke also
extended to the south southwest down and off the California coast. There
was also an area of light to moderately dense smoke east of the Cascades
in Washington associated with fires burning there.

Canada....
The remnant smoke from the persistent wildfires of the past couple of
weeks has moved to the east ahead of a large weather system. The smoke
is now over the southeast half of Manitoba, all of Ontario and northern
and southern Quebec. A large area of moderately dense smoke covered much
of Hudson Bay.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
