DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z August 27, 2017

SMOKE:
Northern US...
A large area of mostly light smoke was seen extending across the entire
northern portion of the US from northern California and Oregon eastward
across the northern Rockies into the northern and central Plains, the
upper Mississippi Valley and across the Great Lakes and upper Ohio Valley
to the mid Atlantic and New England. There are patches of moderately
dense smoke over portions of South Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa. Several
plumes of moderate to dense smoke were also seen near active wildfires
in Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and northern California. The
smoke also extended to the south and southwest off the California coast.

Eastern Canada....
The remnant smoke from the persistent wildfires of the past couple
of weeks has moved to the east ahead of a large weather system in
Nunavut. The smoke is now over the eastern half of Manitoba, all of
Ontario, Hudson Bay, and northern Quebec. The smoke over Hudson Bay and
portions of central and southern Ontario is of moderate density.

Northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba...
Wildfires in northern Saskatchewan are emitting moderate to very dense
smoke plumes spreading east into northern Saskatchewan and west-central
Manitoba.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
